[A cake of half a hekteus and half a hekteus of barley is sacrificed on the hearth] and another ["cheese-shaped" bread and the wrapped offerings,] the priest sacrifices these and he pours [over (them) three kraters of wine and he provides the offerings]. (30) The city provides the offerings necessary for the installation. [The priest receives the monarch and the] hieropoioi and the heralds. [He carries away as gifts of honour the skin and a leg and half of the chest] and half of the stomach. The end [of the hip from the leg that is given to the hieropoioi goes to the thurifer, to the heralds a double portion of the back, bits from under the shoulders,] a three-pronged [spit of black pudding, to the Nestoridai a double portion of the back, to the doctors a single portion of meat, to the aulos-player a portion of meat, and (35) to each] of the coppersmiths [and the potters a part of the head. Commentary

These fragments appear to belong to an ensemble of regulations concerning priesthoods that was perhaps composed after the reorganisation of cults on Kos following the synoecism of the island in 366 BC; cp. CGRN 86). For further discussion of this context, see Sherwin-White and Paul 2013a.

Although the inscription is very fragmentary, four different sections of this general regulation on priesthoods can tentatively be identified: 1) unknown priesthood (lines 1-21); 2) priesthood of Zeus Polieus and the Twelve Gods (lines 21-35 and perhaps more); 3) priesthood of Apollo Dalios (ca. lines 50-57 and perhaps also 57-66 and perhaps more); and 4) perhaps a general section of the regulation concerning priesthoods (line 69 and beyond?). The first two of these sections appear to be introduced by the phrase τοῖσδε τελέζεται ὁ ἱαρεύς, and perhaps all of them were identified by being inscribed at the left margin or being preceded by a short empty space (see also lines 57 and 66). Apart from what is perhaps the conclusion of the document and the regulation as a whole after line 69, side B of the stele is also concerned with the sending of delegations (theoriai) to the sanctuaries of Delos and Delphi, and with sacrifices performed to Apollo Dalios and Leto and others gods in this context. The presence of such regulations in a document concerning priesthoods could be explained by the fact that the priest of Apollo Dalios received his perquisites from the sacrifices prescribed, in this case hides and legs, as usual on Kos, and occasionally the head and the feet of the sacrificial animal.

Line 1: The consecration or initiation of the priest or priestess (telete) is a procedure that punctuated his or her introduction to office. Here, it consisted in rites of purification and a sacrifice, the first ritual act that the priest performed in such a capacity. On this procedure, see Parker - Obbink, Wiemer, Pirenne-Delforge and Paul 2013b: 254-256. The purity rules addressed to the priest which follow closely resemble those found in the regulation concerning the priestess of Demeter on Kos (CGRN 148; see also Parker).

Line 8: On the meaning of the term ἱαρά in Koan inscriptions: “additional offerings for the sacrifice”, see CGRN 86, with Paul 2013a: 339-344.

Lines 20-21: The priesthood in question was apparently attributed to specific subdivisions (triakas, pentekostys) of the three Dorian tribes; cf. Paul 2013b: 249. On the social organisation of Kos, see Sherwin-White, p. 153-174 and Jones.

Lines 21-36: The prescriptions concerning the sacrifice to Zeus Polieus can be seen to closely resemble those found for the same god in the sacrificial calendar concerning the month Batromios, from which they are restored here: cf. CGRN 86 A, lines 47-56 (with Commentary and discussion).

Line 49: The ἀγρεταί were, according to Hesychius (s.v.), a group of nine girls elected every year to serve the cult of Athena, although their mention in this context suggests a wider area of expertise. Their number may be significant with regard to the Koan civic organization and with its political structure revolving around the three Doric tribes (Pamphyloi, Hylleis, Dymanes) .

Lines 54-55: The name of Zeus Ourios, who sends favorable winds and ensures safe travel, is entirely supplemented here, but it coheres with the traces of the intended purpose of the sacrifice (ἐπὶ καλλιαρίαι καὶ οὔ[ωι]) and it is attested on a small altar from Kos, dating to the 1st century BC (IG XII.4 415). On the cult of Zeus Ourios at Delos, see Bruneau.

Lines 56-57: The phrase οὐκ ἐξαγωγὰ ἐκ Κῶ is a variation of the expression οὐκ ἀποφορά found frequently in this collection (cf. CGRN 52, Erchia, passim, and CGRN 32, Thorikos, Commentary to lines 10-12), and in the sacrificial calendar of Kos, CGRN 86. The objective of this rule was to prevent foreign participants in the sacrifices, such as the Knidians (see below), from taking portions of meat when leaving the island; cf. also Ekroth; Paul 2013a: 358-364.

Lines 57-62: Sacrifices were offered by the Knidians and other groups whose names are perhaps lost. Kos was presumably the center of a regional amphictyony, and the starting point for the sending of a common pilgrimage to the sanctuary of Apollo in Delos. Occasionally, the theoroi would continue on their way to Delphi as well, as may be suggested in line 60; see Rutherford. The sending of theoriai by the Koan deme of Isthmos, which may be alluded to in line 66, is attested by Delian inscriptions (IG XI.2 287, line B45, as well as by ID 313a, line 13; 1409, line A30; 1439, line A27; 1441, line A53; and 1450, line A41).

Lines 63-67: The Amphiareidai are a gentilicial group whose name derives from the hero Amphiaraos: see Sherwin-White, p. 165-166.

						<head>Commentary</head>

<p> These fragments appear to belong to an ensemble of regulations concerning priesthoods that was perhaps composed after the reorganisation of cults on Kos following the synoecism of the island in 366 BC; cp. <ref target="CGRN_86">CGRN 86</ref>). For further discussion of this context, see Sherwin-White and Paul 2013a.</p>

<p>Although the inscription is very fragmentary, four different sections of this general regulation on priesthoods can tentatively be identified: 1) unknown priesthood (lines 1-21); 2) priesthood of Zeus Polieus and the Twelve Gods (lines 21-35 and perhaps more); 3) priesthood of Apollo Dalios (ca. lines 50-57 and perhaps also 57-66 and perhaps more); and 4) perhaps a general section of the regulation concerning priesthoods (line 69 and beyond?). The first two of these sections appear to be introduced by the phrase τοῖσδε τελέζεται ὁ ἱαρεύς, and perhaps all of them were identified by being inscribed at the left margin or being preceded by a short empty space (see also lines 57 and 66). Apart from what is perhaps the conclusion of the document and the regulation as a whole after line 69, side B of the stele is also concerned with the sending of delegations (<foreign>theoriai</foreign>) to the sanctuaries of Delos and Delphi, and with sacrifices performed to Apollo Dalios and Leto and others gods in this context. The presence of such regulations in a document concerning priesthoods could be explained by the fact that the priest of Apollo Dalios received his perquisites from the sacrifices prescribed, in this case hides and legs, as usual on Kos, and occasionally the head and the feet of the sacrificial animal.</p>

<p> Line 1: The consecration or initiation of the priest or priestess (<foreign>telete</foreign>) is a procedure that punctuated his or her introduction to office. Here, it consisted in rites of purification and a sacrifice, the first ritual act that the priest performed in such a capacity. On this procedure, see Parker - Obbink, Wiemer, Pirenne-Delforge and Paul 2013b: 254-256. The purity rules addressed to the priest which follow closely resemble those found in the regulation concerning the priestess of Demeter on Kos (<ref target="http://cgrn.ulg.ac.be/CGRN_148/">CGRN 148</ref>; see also Parker).</p>

<p> Line 8: On the meaning of the term ἱαρά in Koan inscriptions: “additional offerings for the sacrifice”, see <ref target="CGRN_86">CGRN 86</ref>, with Paul 2013a: 339-344.</p>

<p> Lines 20-21: The priesthood in question was apparently attributed to specific subdivisions (triakas, pentekostys) of the three Dorian tribes; cf. Paul 2013b: 249. On the social organisation of Kos, see Sherwin-White, p. 153-174 and Jones. </p>

<p> Lines 21-36: The prescriptions concerning the sacrifice to Zeus Polieus can be seen to closely resemble those found for the same god in the sacrificial calendar concerning the month Batromios, from which they are restored here: cf. <ref target="CGRN_86">CGRN 86</ref> A, lines 47-56 (with Commentary and discussion).</p>
<p> Line 49: The ἀγρεταί were, according to Hesychius (s.v.), a group of nine girls elected every year to serve the cult of Athena, although their mention in this context suggests a wider area of expertise. Their number may be significant with regard to the Koan civic organization and with its political structure revolving around the three Doric tribes (Pamphyloi, Hylleis, Dymanes) .</p>

<p> Lines 54-55: The name of Zeus Ourios, who sends favorable winds and ensures safe travel, is entirely supplemented here, but it coheres with the traces of the intended purpose of the sacrifice (ἐπὶ καλλιαρίαι καὶ οὔ<unclear>ρ</unclear><supplied reason="lost">ωι</supplied>) and it is attested on a small altar from Kos, dating to the 1st century BC (<bibl type="abbr" n="IG XII.4">IG XII.4</bibl> 415). On the cult of Zeus Ourios at Delos, see Bruneau.</p>

<p> Lines 56-57: The phrase οὐκ ἐξαγωγὰ ἐκ Κῶ is a variation of the expression οὐκ ἀποφορά found frequently in this collection (cf. <ref target="CGRN_52">CGRN 52</ref>, Erchia, <foreign>passim</foreign>, and <ref target="CGRN_32">CGRN 32</ref>, Thorikos, Commentary to lines 10-12), and in the sacrificial calendar of Kos, <ref target="CGRN_86">CGRN 86</ref>. The objective of this rule was to prevent foreign participants in the sacrifices, such as the Knidians (see below), from taking portions of meat when leaving the island; cf. also Ekroth; Paul 2013a: 358-364.</p>

<p> Lines 57-62: Sacrifices were offered by the Knidians and other groups whose names are perhaps lost. Kos was presumably the center of a regional amphictyony, and the starting point for the sending of a common pilgrimage to the sanctuary of Apollo in Delos. Occasionally, the <foreign>theoroi</foreign> would continue on their way to Delphi as well, as may be suggested in line 60; see Rutherford. The sending of <foreign>theoriai</foreign> by the Koan deme of Isthmos, which may be alluded to in line 66, is attested by Delian inscriptions (<bibl type="abbr" n="IG XI">IG XI</bibl>.2 287, line B45, as well as by <bibl type="abbr" n="ID">ID</bibl> 313a, line 13; 1409, line A30; 1439, line A27; 1441, line A53; and 1450, line A41).</p>

<p> Lines 63-67: The Amphiareidai are a gentilicial group whose name derives from the hero Amphiaraos: see Sherwin-White, p. 165-166.</p>
