Search Instructions

Searching in the CGRN may use a number of individual criteria; in some cases, combinations of search criteria are also possible. There are two main groups of search boxes, which cannot be used simultaneously:

  1. The user may search for any exact combination of words in English within the files. This includes the title, information about the date and the provenance of the text, as well as the bibliography, translations and commentary. For example, it is possible to look for files in which a modern author is mentioned, by entering his or her name into the box (e.g. “Parker”). One may also search for any exact combination of words in French, to obtain results in the translations in this language.
  2. The user may search for any single Greek word (e.g. the lemma “θύω”) or any theme (e.g. “sacrifice”). This type of search will yield all results for each file, i.e. if “θύω” occurs multiple times in a single file, the results show all of these. Click on “add a criterion” to search for a combination (i.e. of two Greek words; of a Greek word and a theme; or of two themes). Both of these types of queries may be refined by using one or more of the three “Filters” listed in the menus below the search boxes (date, location, and type of text). Thus, to continue the examples given above, one might search for instances of “Parker” but only in connection with fifth-century inscriptions, or of θύω but only in the Aegean islands. Concerning searches of type 2, some further instructions apply:
  • In the search box “Greek” one may search for any single string of characters in the Greek texts, with the default option “(none)” selected. If desired, the user may indicate that the Greek word in question is an “exact lemma” (i.e. a canonical form in LSJ), or that it “starts with” or “ends with” a particular string of letters. For example, entering θυσια (nb. no accent needed) as an “exact lemma” in the box will yield all instances of θυσία. Note also that dialectical variations have not been lemmatised as such: for instance, θεωρός and θεαρός are both found under the lemma θεωρός, or the forms Διὰ, Ζηνί, etc., or any dialectical variants, will easily be identified by searching for the exact lemma “Ζεύς” or “Ζεύσ” (typing ς or σ yields the same result for any search for Greek words).
  • In the search box “Theme”, one may select from a closed list of general subjects in the collection, for example, instances of a “liquid” or “deity”. In some cases, it is also possible to search for a more specific sub-theme, for example, instances of the “deity” Apollo.
  • The command CLEAR ALL (bottom left corner) clears all entered search terms and selected filters.

The user may also leave the search boxes empty, and only select one or more filters. For example, by combining the filters Date, Type of Text and Location,  one may find all “3rd century” “priestly contracts” from “Anatolia”.
